About the Program:

Our overall purpose is to develop healthy living habits among Plummer-Worley School District students while improving food security. Our goal is to instill a value of growing and eating fresh fruits and vegetables among the youth and enhance place-based science learning. The garden at Lakeside Elementary School (LES) provides a space for students to get their hands dirty while learning about the following topics:
1. plant lifecycles
2. starting seeds
3. planting a garden
4. harvesting fruits and vegetables
5. food production and preparation
6. nutrition education
Securing this grant will allow LES to build upon the current school garden program, while reaching 353 students in Lakeside Elementary School, Lakeside Middle School, and Lakeside High School, as well as 90 students in Success Center (elementary) and Strengthening the Spirit (middle school) afterschool programs. We would like to enhance our garden with additional infrastructure such as fencing and water supply, fruit trees and perennial plants. With the grant, we will add a fence around the garden beds to keep animal contamination out of the gardens, bringing us closer to garden to cafeteria certification.
