About the Program:

Our garden has three goals:

1. To provide an outdoor laboratory for Elementary and High School Science courses
2. To augment nutrition programs existing on campus
3. To beautify campus and provide a source of pride for students and families in the community.

Notasulga High School and the surrounding community is rural, under-served, and very poor, 100% of the students that attend NHS are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Down town Notasulga has one open business. There is very little to do and very little to be proud of. The school provides an opportunity for this community to come together. A few years ago we were fortunate enough to get a new principle. Ms. Sullen has taken Notasulga from a school for lost souls to a school of opportunity. With the academic and behavioral pieces coming together it is time to make NHS the shining star of the community it can be. We are hoping that a community garden will not only provide a living science laboratory, but give students a project they can invest in and be proud of. Allowing students to grow food they can share with their friends and family and give the community something to point to as a source of pride.
