About the Program:

Built in 2007, the Benjamin Brown garden is in an actively used part of the school yard beneath a tree, once a sapling, that has now grown to shade much of the area. The donated materials included untreated cedar boards, which have decomposed gradually and are now falling apart. This grant will allow us to redesign the layout of the garden to accommodate the new shade areas and the active walkways, as well as replace the broken beds with long-term, sustainable alternatives. Additionally, we will be able to increase the growing space, replenish the soil through compost and cover crops over the winter, and engage a whole new generation of students in the creation of their very own garden, which will be planted afresh in spring 2014.
