About the Program:
The Victory Garden at Kent County Middle School was founded in 2010 when once oth the teachers realized that a number of his students were recipients of the very food drive that they were participating in. The garden produces about 1000 lbs of food annually. The program has become an official part of the 7th grade curriculum.
The KCMS Victory Garden has four goals:
- to help students learn about how our foods grow;
- to give students hands-on opportunities throughout the seasons to plant, tend and harvest garden produce;
- to connect students to their community, by donating their labor and produce to provide fresh local food to economically disadvantaged families (including some families of students themselves).
- to teach students what to do with fresh vegetables and encourage healthy eating.
In the fall of 2013, with the help of a private donation, a grant from the Whole Kids Foundation and Rebuilding Together, Kent County, we built an outdoor classroom adjacent to the garden.
