About the Program:

The Kahakai School Garden program is looking to become an inspiration and a platform for student entrepreneurs. We have begun a program that has students leading weekly harvests that provide real foods for a weekly "Market Day." The students are responsible for growing, picking, washing and selling produce for "Market Day." All proceeds go back into the garden to pay for materials, and our hope is that one day our Garden will be completely self sustainable.

Our garden is operating wonderfully. However, it is in desperate need of a proper shelter and storage area. Currently, the children begin each class by gathering under a tent to listen to the day's lesson, but the tent is so weather beaten that rips and tears force us to replace it multiple times a year. We believe that with some help from the community and a Whole Foods Grant grant we could build a proper shelter and our Garden Program will grow into a real outdoor classroom teaching sustainability!
