About the Program:

Westwood High School has a trend of unhealthy eating practices, with most students making unhealthy food choices. This is causing a rise in the number of cases of obesity within the student population. This is the first attempt at establishing a greenhouse at Westwood High School. The complication of our geographic location is the cold climate that dominates most of our school year. There are two main goals of the project: 1) we wish to prove that food can be grown in a year-round greenhouse in a Northern cold climate, and 2) we wish to produce sustainable fresh produce at the school to support the food education classroom. A secondary goal of the project is to establish a relationship between the foods classroom and the greenhouse, in which the food classroom provides the cost of re-planting, fertilizing and maintaining the greenhouse over the course of its lifetime. We also hope to inspire other schools in our region to establish successful greenhouse projects. This program is supported by .
