Ketchum-Grande Memorial School
A main goal of the garden project is to cultivate community and tolerance in our school and help our students embrace diversity. We also wish to help students become more informed consumers. Many of the students at our school come from homes with weak family guidance and limited exposure to nutritional food choices. Students will learn about the health benefits of including more fruits and vegetable in their diets. They will also discover that fresh fruits and vegetables taste good and make them feel better. Additionally, the garden will help students develop an understanding of the complex topic of sustainability. When they see how food is produced, they will develop a better understanding of where their food comes from and how their food choices affect the well-being of the environment. Organic gardening methods will be used and demonstrated and we will extend our composting program to teach habits that promote conservation. Information gleaned from activities associated with this garden project will be life lessons for our students. Those students that stay for more than one year will become our own master gardeners.
