Lillian C. Ruediger Elementary School
The goal of our garden is to introduce the students into the world of gardening. Since children are kinesthetic learners and love to play, introducing them to gardening will be a great way of increasing their physical activity, increase their knowledge of science, and allows them to be hands-on in nature. The students also get to work together in small groups, learn responsibility, and the garden allows for creativity and a sense of pride when producing fruits and vegetables that they will ultimately get to eat. By involving the students in the process of growing fruits and vegetables, it exposes the students to science and a love for gardening. Having the students to eat fresh fruits and vegetables they grew, allows them to have a sense of ownership. When the students grow the items, they are more willing to eat them, take them home to show their parents, and lastly, get their parents to purchase the fruits or vegetables on the next shopping trip.
