About the Program:

The Gilchrist Elementary School Mission Statement sums up our desire to start and maintain a community garden for our school. "The Gilchrist Family of Lifelong Learners--students, teachers, staff, parents, and community members-- is committed to an on-going planning process that will ensure a quality learning environment, state-of-the-art facility, and a curriculum that will be the foundation for this life-long learning."

The best method to learn is through DOING. Only when we sow the seeds, tend them, nurture them, and see their growth can we make our community better. We know there is no better way to foster love of self, love of health, and love of community than by growing together. Creating a sense of ownership in our students with food grown in our own campus backyard will serve a lifetime of Gilchrist alum.

Our wonderful student body is diverse. The best way to bridge and strengthen diverse differences--such as English as a second language, special learning needs, reduced/free lunch recipients--is to create a campus pride with a school garden.
