Glasgow Middle School
The goal of the gardening club is to promote health and nutrition education by integrating existing and planned gardens into the overall 6th, 7th, and 8th grade curricula starting with science, consumer science, and after school clubs then expanding to health classes. Students will grow their own produce, take an active role in food preparation, and engage the Glasgow community in learning about food production, distribution, and preparation. We hope to instill in them healthy eating habits and cooking styles that will carry over into adulthood.
We plan to expand our existing efforts and build outdoor raised beds as well as take advantage of hydroponic gardening indoors. Eventually, we hope to raise enough money to build a greenhouse that will support year round gardening. The produce we plan to grow includes vegetables such as tomatoes, lettuce, herbs, roots, and beans. We also plan to grow fruits such as blueberries.
Describe the garden leadership team and roles: The students will demonstrate leadership skills through participation in the garden club activities, promoting the importance of making healthy food choices, and maintaining the vegetable garden. In addition, students will recruit their peers to become garden club volunteers.
