About the Program:

Our goal is to educate the Southwest Middle School community about sustainable, organic gardening practices appropriate for our Kansas climate and to educate students and the school community about healthful food choices. Through our vegetable/herb garden and orchard projects, our students experience hands-on lessons in ecology, conservation, health/nutrition, economics/budgeting, and teamwork. We all become more aware and appreciative of our food sources and become more informed consumers. Students also learn about vocational opportunities in food production and marketing. We hope to provide a significant amount of fresh organic fruits and vegetables to our school community through donations to the school cafeteria and sales to parents and school staff. We hope to become a self-sustaining long term part of our school community.
