About the Program:

Over the last three years we have secured funds to create an outdoor learning environment. Currently our courtyard features a butterfly habitat, pond, and various plants (trees, scrubs, flowers). We experimented with growing our own tomatoes and had great success with just planting two tomato plants. Due to the enthusiasm created when we grew just two tomato plants that produced an abundance of tomatoes, dreams of growing more fruits and vegetables emerged! From these tomatoes we made and served homemade salsa and pico de gallo to eat chips as a healthy snack at our weekly/bi-weekly club meetings. The students wanted to know what we would grow next, so after stumbling upon this grant, we knew this would be the perfect opportunity to expand our garden if chosen for the award. We plan to incorporate technology through internet research to use helpful hints on growing various fruits and vegetables. These will be served at our club meetings which involve students grade 4-6.
