About the Program:

Longleaf Elementary School has a husband and wife team that spearheads our garden program. Theresa McLaughlin is our 5th grade Math teacher and her husband Robert is a retired civil servant who is a Master Gardener. We intend to create a sustainable garden program which serves our students, their parents and surrounding community. We have developed a master plan that incorporates our entire campus.

Our primary volunteer resource is our staff and faculty with our students. For more arduous tasks we have recruited volunteers from our local United Way, State College and Escambia County Master Gardeners.

This grant will provide us the opportunity to establish our garden on the campus with durable raised beds that will support our curriculum, nutrition, physical fitness and wellness initiatives.

Our school garden will include an orchard and butterfly gardens located throughout the campus.
