About the Program:

We started our garden last year. We are very food insecure. More than 90 cents of every dollar is spent on food imported from out of state. In a disaster, our town would go hungry in less than a week.

Our long range goals include growing a substantial supply of fresh fruits, vegetables and raising chickens for eggs to supply our cafeteria, support students' families and/or to sell at the local Saturday farmers' market.

If we receive this grant we will spend the money on vital immediate needs that will put us on the path to our major goals above. We need: (1) sunshine mix #4 @ $32/bale because our soil is very nutrient poor (need 10 so cost is ~$320); (2) perlite to fix oxygen in the soil (~$100); (3) starter cuttings (~$100); (4) supplies for a sub-irrigation system (we get little rain here so want to replace our wasteful broken sprinkler - this will absorb the remaining funds).

Thank you for your consideration and help making Lana'i a model green island of food sustainability!
