About the Program:

The goal of the Community United garden is to provide a safe place for students to learn about food and where it comes from. We will use the grant to create a more sustainable garden so that students will have a consistent program year after year. We hope to create a learning environment where the older students are teaching the younger students about gardening and the teacher is only facilitating. This promotes responsibility and develops a sense of community with the garden as its focus. In addition, we would like to use the garden in hands on lessons in science, art, math and language arts. Turning our garden into an outdoor classroom will help students connect subjects and give them practical applications for what they are learning. Finally, we would use the garden to supplement our wellness program and to provide produce for our weekly farmer's market. Students will be able to see how food is grown, cared for, harvested and then sold. With this grant, our garden will be able to enrich the lives of urban kids by giving them a place to learn about nature and its importance in our world.
