Delevan Drive Elementary
The original garden at Delevan Drive Elementary was meant to be a part of an old horticultural program at the school. Sadly, LAUSD eliminated various garden programs a long time ago. The unused and deteriorated nursery, chick coop, and garden shed was a gloomy sight. Last June, Enrich LA was solicited to renovate the mini farm so that it can flourish again. The school pledged $1500 and the parent group, Friends of Delevan, raised an additional $5000. We have come a long way since then with the clearing away of the weeds, repairing of the sprinkler system, construction of a simple outdoor kitchen arbor, and the addition of almost 30 yards of compost, generously donated by Whole Foods. Most recently, we've also planted close to 300 winter seedlings. The garden is starting to come alive again, but more work is still needed. This grant, along with the support of many devoted and untiring volunteers, will bring back to life the abandoned tool shed and nursery for the students to enjoy.
This program is supported by ENRICH LA.
