The Edible Schoolyard Academy trains educators to create powerful and sustainable edible education programs in their schools and communities. Each June, we invite teachers, administrators, and advocates from around the world to spend five days behind the scenes at the Edible Schoolyard Berkeley. Learn and experience first-hand the core principles and practical tools for bringing academic subjects to life in the kitchen, garden, and lunchroom. Whether you are a new or seasoned practitioner, the Academy will strengthen your program and build your leadership in the field.

Daily Schedule

Sunday, June 23rd
The Academy begins at 2:00 pm with registration and a welcome reception at the Edible Schoolyard. Enjoy light refreshments, go on a tour of the Edible Schoolyard, meet fellow participants and Academy staff, and receive your program curriculum binder. The reception will end at 5:30 pm.

Monday, June 24th
Begin your first day of Academy programming with breakfast at 7:45 am.  With your assigned cohort, spend the day in your first of three Academy sessions -- garden, kitchen or organizational development. Each session is designed to be informative for individuals of varied backgrounds and expertise, and all participants attend all three sessions over the course of the Academy.  Lunch is served at midday, and programming ends at 4:00 pm.

Tuesday, June 25th
Begin with breakfast at 7:45 am, and spend the day in one of the two sessions you haven't yet attended -- either garden, kitchen, or organizational development.  Break for lunch at midday, and continue with programming until 4:00 pm.  Take a break before re-convening for a relaxed evening reception.

Wednesday, June 26th
After breakfast at 7:45 am, attend the first half of the remaining session (garden, kitchen or organizational development) with your cohort until lunchtime.  After lunch, head out on a field trip to visit local edible education programs and speak with representatives from other local garden and kitchen teachers.  Day ends at 4:00 pm.

Thursday, June 27th
After breakfast at 7:45 am, continue with the second half of the session begun on Wednesday.  After lunch, participate in closing activities until the Academy ends at 3:00 pm.

Over the course of the Academy, participants will have an opportunity to learn about curriculum integration and development, funding strategies, volunteer management, class scheduling, rituals and routines of garden and kitchen classrooms, outreach strategies, and much more. Participants will leave the Academy with garden and kitchen lessons linked to academic standards, tools for developing programs in their own communities and strategies to strengthen existing programs, and an in-depth understanding of how the Edible Schoolyard operates on a daily basis. Finally, participants join a network of people all over the world who are engaged in bringing edible education programs to their communities.
