About the Program:

The STAR Academy Garden will benefit our school children by providing a hands-on experience for our students to go along with their science, social studies, math and health/nutrition studies. Our garden has already begun to positively impact our school community by bringing parents, teachers and students together. Parents who have never been involved in our school before are excited that they have found a way to contribute to our school community. Students who had never seen a fruit-bearing plant before have been amazed that eggplants and tomatoes do not come in plastic bags but from plants that we can actually grow ourselves!

Our hope is that students will acquire basic gardening and horticulture skills, gain understanding and perspective on the food we eat, where it comes from and how it is grown while working cooperatively with teachers, parents, students and other members of the school community. We hope that because of their work in the garden, our students will be able to make smarter, healthier food choices inside and outside of school and ultimately lead healthier, happier lives.
