I am one of the garden teachers at the Edible Schoolyard Berkeley.
I started this position in the fall of 2011.
I grew up in Oakland, CA, graduated from
Oakland High, and attended Merritt and Laney Junior colleges, focusing
on environmental education with an emphasis on urban agriculture.
For the last 15 years, I have devoted my professional career towards
working with youth and people of color, teaching a host of subjects
such as job readiness, conservation, experiential education, garden
education, food justice and local food systems. Before
working with ESY Berkeley, I was the farm/garden manager for People's
Grocery in West Oakland CA, Garden teacher at Longfellow Middle School
in Berkeley, CA and Garden coordinator for Berkeley Youth
Alternatives, also in Berkeley, CA.
I have a special spot in my heart for community gardens, farmers
markets and local producers, and I'm a huge advocate of school
gardens. I believe in the power of creating opportunities for young
people to experience the outdoors, from the wilderness to farming. I
am passionate about social change and believe that everyone should
have the right to clean, healthy, affordable food to eat, including
the ability to grow some of their own.
I have been married to my loving wife Shoshana for almost 10 years. We
have two children, Benyamin and Azucena, and currently reside in West
Berkeley, CA.
