A Third-grade Perspective on Edible Education

Third-grade students from Illinois' North Shore Country Day School took a field trip to Chicago's Green City Market in October. After meeting farmers and tasting seasonal produce, they headed to the Edible Gardens for an activity: pulling carrots! Students first walked around the garden to discuss the different crops growing (pumpkins, squash, lettuce, spinach, arugula, chard, figs, peppers, carrots, cucumbers). They also learned about the different growing conditions for the fall produce they observed. The student responses were gathered a week after their field trip to the farmer's market and garden. The Edible Schoolyard Project worked in collaboration with the Edible Gardens to collect these insightful (and often funny!) observations.
