A Younger Voice of Reason

After a momentary ban of her blog NeverSeconds, Martha Payne is back to snapping photos of her school food in Lochgilphead, Scotland. She is also close to raising £100,000 for Mary's Meals, an international charity that helps to feed children in impoverished communities.

Payne has been photo blogging about her school lunches since May of this year. Each day she takes a picture of her food, writes her reaction, and rates her meal using five metrics: a rating of taste approval, # of mouthfuls to measure portion size, type of course, a rating of healthfulness, and price.

Though Payne is not the first child to have something to say about nutrition and health, she is attracting a large audience (four million viewers, to be exact). Her diligence in posting a photo every single day deserve praise, but it is really her funny, clever and always curious thoughts on the quality of the food she is eating which make for a lively argument in favor of better school food.

Updated daily: NeverSeconds. For further reading on Payne's project, see this week's newsletter for a link to a New York Times feature.
