About the Program:

We are a school garden with a focus of outdoor education. We are hoping to develop into a more vital and integrated part of our community through donations of our produce to students and families. We have partnered with WOOFER volunteers, parents, CVSan, The Crayon Initiative, our cafeteria for composting and continue to look into ways in which we can develop something that will engage young minds to get their hands dirty.

I have a passion for nature and science. This has translated into becoming a Master Gardener for the County of Alameda in 2018 to better provide information to our students about the food we produce. To my chagrin, UC does not have any resources specific to young people and how to change our cultural practices they teach. As a mother of 3 boys, the youngest was born with Down Syndrome, I know first hand how my influence has produced certain practice.

My husband and I are also owners of 3 restaurants in the Bay Area and feel very strongly about creating a learning experience for our youth to change the eating habits of the future. I hope to contribute toward more awareness of food waste, consumption practices, and nurturing young minds to try new things. The students constantly ask when I will be able to open the gates for them again to come and get their hands dirty. I love their interest and will continue to nurture their inquisitive curiosity.

If you have any questions, please feel to contact me per email (raquelmallie@mac.com) or phone (415-370-5703 cell) in the future. Thank you for providing this opportunity to learn.
