About the Program:

Through a partnership with the Joshua Levine Memorial Foundation, Slow Food East End hires three master farmers to work with local schools (nearly 20) to start and sustain gardens and greenhouses.

Being able to help our local schools start and develop school gardens has been a mission of our East End chapter of Slow Food, since our founding in 2004 at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor. With the sustained generosity of the Levine family we were also able this year to provide $500 grants for garden tools and supplies to eleven schools this year, which builds on the technical support we are currently providing. Further expertise is provided via the Edible School Gardens of the East End at monthly school garden site meetings.

The $500 grants were specifically tailored to meet the needs of already established school gardens helping with day to day needs rather than larger improvements. The funds will be used to for compost bins, irrigation, tools, hoop houses, seeds, bedding plants, and wintering beds.

Nearly 20 schools are participating in these programs, with two more coming on board next year: Bridgehampton School, East Hampton High School, Greenport School, Hampton Bays Middle School, Oysterponds School, Quogue School, Sag Harbor School, Southampton High School, Southold School, Springs School, and Tuckahoe School, Childhood Development Center of the Hamptons. Hayground, Ross Lower and Upper Schools, and Westhampton School, Long Island, New York.
