About the Program:

Our school is very remote and a 40 minute drive to a grocery store and even farther for larger shopping choices. Our school has a population of 61 students and 80% of our student body are First Nations Peoples. Living in such a remote area meant less healthy choices for students and community members so it came about that the students wanted to grow food for the lunch program but also for community members as well. A community team came together along with students and a plan went into place after receiving a grant from "Adopt A School" Vancouver Sun.

In the early spring of 2015 we set out to refurbish an old greenhouse that had been used for storage for the past 10 years. We received a grant to replace the old fiberglass skin with a new bubblewrap that is energy efficient and with the help of local volunteers we now have a 20' x 60' greenhouse to use this fall and winter to grow produce for our students and community members. We have also started to design and build raised beds for a school/community garden where old playground equipment once stood.  We still have a lot to do but so excited about the outdoor learning opportunities for students as all the learning they will have in planning and building the garden.
