About the Program:

At the Lab School we understand the connection
between active learning and achievement inside and out of the
classroom.  Our mission is to create a learning garden that
serves as a tool for interdisciplinary, hands-on education, that
also creates a much-needed connection to the environment, the
food we eat and how our food choices impact ourselves and those
    around us.
The Lab School of Washington is a private school for students with
learning disabilities.  Our students require individualized
instruction to meet their reading, writing and math challenges.
Additionally our students are challenged with processing
disorders, ADHD, fine and gross motor difficulties, and social
and emotional struggles.  Students come to the Lab School when
the traditional school framework has failed them.
We transformed an old playground into a beautiful garden
space that now houses twelve raised beds.  Students were the
driving force behind the plans for the garden, they worked
collaboratively to design and create our educational garden.
Since the inception of our garden students have been involved in
the entire process from seed to table and have stepped outside of
their comfort zone, tasting vegetables such as kohlrabi,
    watermelon radishes and brussels sprouts!
