Alice Waters
 
Alice Waters, founder of Chez Panisse Restaurant and Café in Berkeley, California, has championed local, organic farms for over four decades. After helping to change the American food landscape, Alice introduced her ideas into the public schools with the Edible Schoolyard, a program that involves students in all aspects of growing, cooking, and sharing food at the table.

The Edible Schoolyard Project Board

Mark Buell
 
Mark Buell has a degree in Political Science from the University of San Francisco and was appointed the city’s first Director of Economic Development. He was a Founding Member and President of CALED, the California Association for Local Economic Development. He served for ten years on the board of the National Council for Urban Economic Development and was Regional Vice President of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials. Mr. Buell is Chair of the Board of the Edible Schoolyard Project, Chair of the Board of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, President of the San Francisco Recreation, and Parks Commission and Chair of the Board of the America’s Cup Organizing Committee.
 
Greta Caruso

Greta Caruso works at Good Eggs, a San Francisco-based company with a mission to grow and sustain local food systems worldwide. Before joining the board of the Edible Schoolyard Project, she was the Outreach Coordinator for the Chez Panisse Foundation and a Special Projects Coordinator for Alice Waters. Prior to that, she worked at the Rome Sustainable Food Project at the American Academy in Rome and at Beetlebung Farm in Chilmark, Massachusetts. She graduated from Yale with a B.A. in Humanities.

Troy Duster

Troy Duster is Silver Professor of Sociology and Director of the Institute for the History of the Production of Knowledge at New York University, and he also holds an appointment as Chancellor’s Professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He served as chair of the joint National Institutes of Health / Department of Energy advisory committee on Ethical, Legal and Social Issues in the Human Genome Project. He is a past-president of the American Sociological Association (2004-2005) and was chair of the Board of Directors of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (2003-2004). His research interests include the social and political implications of developments in human molecular genetics and the sociology of law. He is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of Mills College and a member of the Research Advisory Board of the Innocence Project.

Sherry Hirota

Sherry Hirota is the Chief Executive Officer of Asian Health Services, Inc. in Oakland, California. She is an Emeritus Board Member of the California Endowment and serves as Vice President of the Board of the East Bay Community Foundation. She was a Founding Member and Chair of the Asian Pacific Islander American Health Forum, the Alameda Alliance for Health. Her leadership in the area of cultural competency, language access standards, and advocacy for the immigrant health and the underserved has been recognized nationally. Ms. Hirota's numerous awards include the California Wellness Foundation's 2005 Champions of Health Professions Diversity Award, Robert Wood Johnson Community Health Leadership Award, and Woman of the Year, 16th Assembly District of California.

Christina Kim

Christina Kim is trained in fine art and is owner of the fashion house dosa. Based in New York and Los Angeles, she works with traditional craftspeople around the world – from India to Mexico – and uses their crafts and fabrics in the designs of her clothing and housewares. Ms. Kim is committed to honoring human work, traditions and creativity, while maintaining sound ecological practices.

Kyle Redford

Kyle Redford is a fifth grade teacher at Marin Country Day School. Prior to her recent work as a self-contained classroom teacher, she held various positions teaching history and English, supervised K-8 curriculum development, and created and led service and community learning programs at several independent schools. She has been an educator for over 25 years. Kyle is the Education Editor for the Yale Center for Dylsexia and Creativity and writes education articles for Education Week and Huffpost. She serves on the World Savvy National Advisory Board, The Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity Advisory Board, and The Center for Supportive Schools Board of Trustees. She received her B.A. in political science from the University of Colorado and her M.A. in history from Northwestern University.

Neil Smith

Neil Smith served as the principal at Martin Luther King Middle School from 1989 until 2002 and partnered with Alice to establish the first Edible Schoolyard in the nation.  He recently retired from Berkeley Unified School District as the Assistant Superintendent of Schools and is now consulting with other school districts.  He has two children in college and lives with his wife in Oakland.
